Santa Maria del Popolo

THE Caravaggio’s OF Santa Maria del Popolo

I’m a bit embarrassed by my poor photographs of these two Caravaggio masterpieces on display in the Santa Maria del Popolo. My pictures don’t do justice to the paintings but even a glimpse of a Caravaggio is kind of a treat all in itself.

Caravaggio revolutionized painting with his jet black backgrounds bringing the subjects into the spotlight. His sense of realism hadn’t been done in artwork before him. His portrayal of Saint Peter being hoisted upside down on the cross is breathtaking, up close you see the dirty feet of the henchmen.
