Minne di Sant’Agata

"Every sweet represents a fact," a Sicilian writer once put it "every dessert is an episode" ⁣

π˜”π˜ͺ𝘯𝘯e π˜₯𝘦 𝘚𝘒𝘯𝘡'𝘈𝘨𝘒𝘡𝘒 (or π˜”π˜ͺ𝘯𝘯π˜ͺ π˜₯π˜ͺ 𝘝π˜ͺ𝘳𝘨π˜ͺ𝘯π˜ͺ) I think they are one in the same. I didn't think I would find these in Palermo in November, her Saint Day is in February in Catania, not here, but I was able to find one place that had them ⁣

Saint Agatha (231-251) repelled the advances of the Roman prefect Quintianus. He persisted and she resisted and this led to her arrest and extreme torture - the amputation of her breasts - and eventual death. ⁣⁣

The people of Sicily remember Saint Agatha and honor a young girl standing up for herself and repelling the unwanted advances of a man of power by making these little cakes. This says a lot about the Sicilian character. Though they may lose every battle they stick up for what is right. ⁣
