Il Fornaio

Wedged on a side street between Piazza Navona and Camp de’ Fiori is this dazzling little pasticceria. The windows are brimming with cookies and fruit tartlets, and creamy pastries.

I stumbled across this place in 2021 and was entranced by their window display, however when I first discovered it I had already eaten a lot and couldn’t really entertain the idea of more. Upon my return to Rome in 2022 I went in on an empty stomach. A dazzling array of 𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘵𝘵𝘢 𝘮𝘢 𝘣𝘶𝘰𝘯𝘪 (“ugly but good”), 𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘪 (bitter almond), 𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪 (pine nut), 𝘣𝘰𝘤𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘯𝘪 𝘤𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘦 𝘢𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘢 (bite-size bitter cherry cookies), 𝘱𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘤𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘰, etc! ⁣

I was feeling a little bit confident with my Italian weights and measures and spoken quantities, but I got it a little bit wrong and ended up with a huge bag  of cookies. ⁣

Frustratingly for my fellow American readers there is a chain of restaurants up and down the west coast with this same name but Il Forniao in Rome is completely unrelated, most likely completely unaware of its American namesake.
